Camus, and that faith is merely a self-constructed comfort to ward away the coldness of the absurd. We persuade ourselves with visions of rebirth, of energy, and limitless possibility, just like a child persuades itself that the world is harmless. We cannot face that other extreme - it is more horrible than anything. Instead we wall ourselves in with our sugary delusions, cheerfully, with a smile, and with a terrified backward glance.
The greatest fear of all is the fear of being alone. And even if - and especially if - we find ourselves physically alone, we could not bear being spiritually abandoned. All of us need our consolations, and we find them in the idea of the eternal. Like being afraid of the darkness, we stare into the void always imagining that something is staring back.
